Charges against former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Bassam Adeel Jaleel have been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution in connection with the MMPRC corruption scandal.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said Bassam has been charged with money laundering linked to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation) corruption case.
ACC said investigations found that funds intended as acquisition costs for leased islands and lagoons through MMPRC were embezzled and routed through accounts linked to SOF Company.
It added that, with the involvement of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, USD 29,000 was deposited into Bassam’s bank account.
The commission said the funds were later used for personal expenses.
Bassam is currently serving a 32-year prison sentence after being convicted by the Criminal Court on four counts of embezzlement and money laundering involving USD 1.2 million (approximately MVR 19 million), as well as USD 10,000 transferred from FIFA to FAM.
Police have also seized two apartments purchased by Bassam in Amin Avenue in connection with the case. Prosecutors are additionally pursuing action against Amin Construction Company and other parties linked to the investigation.
