A video containing alleged explicit content shared by the imam of the Goidhoo Mosque in Shaviyani Atoll in a Viber group is under investigation, police have said.

The imam of the island’s only mosque is also a hafiz and a well-known farmer in the community.

It is alleged that he shared a video depicting same-sex activity in a Viber group that includes a large number of Goidhoo residents.

Police said a case involving the circulation of a sexually explicit video in a Viber group was reported to them on Wednesday.

The matter is now under investigation, and police said they are looking into the contents of the video.

It is not yet clear whether the Islamic Ministry has taken any action in relation to the case.
