The Criminal Court on Monday afternoon freed MP Abdullah Sinan.
Machangoalhi-South MP Abdullah Sinan and Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed was taken to the court on Monday morning for a remand hearing on the state-initiated bribery case against the two MPs.
The court had ordered the immediate release of MP Sinan, while MP Ilham is still in court.
Speaking to the press Sinan’s attorney said that the prosecution had insisted on keeping him remanded until a verdict is reached in the case.
However, Criminal Court’s chief judge Adam Arif, who was presiding over the case Monday, admitted that the case was politically motivated and said that the case had no legal grounds, the attorney revealed.
The Supreme Court’s unprecedented ruling late Thursday ordered the release of nine high-profile political prisoners, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim and former Vice President Ahmed Adheem, and reinstated the 12 parliamentarians – including Sinan and Ilham – who were expelled after its ruling on parliament floor-crossing, which has since been nullified.
