The Parliament has scheduled a session for 1:00pm today to elect a new Deputy Speaker.

Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that an additional session will be held today when former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim abruptly announced his resignation, while the no-confidence motion against him had been scheduled for today's 9:00am sitting in Parliament.

After the Speaker had announced Ahmed Nazim's resignation as Deputy Speaker during the 9:00am session, the session was brought to an end due to no other matters having been scheduled on the agenda.

An announcement was made afterward that a sitting would be held today at 1:00pm, but the agenda for that sitting has not been announced yet. However, a Parliament super majority People's National Congress (PNC) member stated that the sitting would cover the election of a Deputy Speaker.

While the first term of the Parliament was to expire on 14th May as per guidelines, the term has been extended up until today.
