Charges raised against Aflah for sexual assault of minor

Following his arrest, police said Aflah was accused of sexually assaulting the victim over a period when she was between 14 and 16 years old.

Former Bright Minds owner Ali Aflah has been charged with sexually assaulting a child while in a position of trust, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) has said.

A media official from the PG Office said six charges were filed against Aflah and submitted to the court on Tuesday.

The charges are:

  • Three counts of sexual intercourse with a mahram
  • Grooming a child for sexual purposes
  • Sexual assault of a child while in a position of trust
  • Obstruction of justice

Aflah was arrested in February and has remained in custody since then. His detention has been extended several times, with his current 30-day remand set to expire on 11 June.

He was arrested upon his return to the Maldives on a flight from Mumbai, India, after spending several days abroad following allegations that he had sexually assaulted a girl.
