Preliminary autopsy results of the Italian divers who descended into the underwater cave near V. Alimatha indicate that they died due to drowning or lack of oxygen.

According to reports by some Italian newspapers, preliminary autopsy results of two out of the five divers have been received. They belong to Monica Montefalcone, a professor at the University of Genoa, and her daughter, Giorgia Somacal.

According to the report, the death of both individuals was caused by a lack of air supply or depletion from their oxygen cylinders, or due to facing a state of anoxia. This refers to dying from a lack of oxygen or drowning.

Newspapers reported that final autopsy results are expected to be available within three months.

Italy is currently investigating this matter as a case of negligent death. The newspapers also stated that the Italian Prosecutor's Office has requested cooperation from Maldivian authorities for the investigation through a letter.

Following a four-day search and recovery operation to find the Italian divers, the recovery team has released a preliminary report prepared based on information gathered so far.

In that report, experienced divers advised not to enter the cave without permission from relevant authorities, specialized training for cave diving, and the necessary technical equipment.

The report also noted that since cave diving is inherently dangerous, it is not something that should be done by anyone other than those who have received specialized training for it and possess the complete equipment.

The operation was carried out at an international level by the Divers Alert Network (DAN) in collaboration with the Maldivian military and police.

The casualties of this incident, which stands as the most tragic maritime accident in recent Maldivian history, include Federico Gualtieri, a diver from Borgomanero, Italy; Monica Montefalcone, a professor at the University of Genoa; her daughter, Giorgia Somacal; Muriel Odenino from Turin, Italy; and Gianluca Benedetti from Padua, Italy.

The operation was halted following the passing of Staff Sergeant First Class Mohamed Mahdhy, one of the most experienced divers of the MNDF Coast Guard, while taking part in the search and recovery mission.
