Supreme Court has scheduled another hearing in the appeal case of Hassan Fareed, who was sentenced to death over the killing of Abdullah Shuhad during a fight in Fuvahmulah.

In January 2010, the Criminal Court sentenced Fareed, of Karankaage, to death after finding him guilty of assaulting and killing Shuhad, of Meko, during a confrontation in Fuvahmulah.

High Court later upheld the conviction, after which Fareed appealed the case to the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court concluded hearings in the case on November 15, 2021. At the time, then Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, who presided over the bench, said hearings had been completed but noted that additional hearings could be held if further clarification became necessary during the review process.

The original bench also included former justices Azmiralda Zahir, Husnu Suood, Mahaz Ali Zahir and justice Aisha Shujune Mohamed.

A new hearing has now been scheduled for June 11, with a reconstituted bench following changes to the composition of the court. The hearing is believed to be procedural in nature due to the changes in the panel of judges.

The current bench is headed by Chief Justice Abdul Ghani Mohamed and includes Justices Aisha Shujune Mohamed, Ali Rasheed Hussain, Hussain Shaheed and Mohamed Saleem.

Several months ago, the court also scheduled a hearing with the new bench, though proceedings were unable to go ahead.
