Things have heated up after former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is contesting for the post of MDP Chairperson, stated that those who lose in the election scheduled for the 12th of next month must remain "somewhat at a distance" from party affairs, and that those who win must stay close.
During a debate that took place in the WhatsApp group for members of the MDP National Council, Nasheed stated: "While the losing individuals remain behind in party matters, I hope they remain somewhat at a distance, yet in support of the party."
"Those who win must stay close," Nasheed said.
Following Nasheed's statement, National Council member and lawyer Mahfooz Saeed challenged him the most.
Mahfooz stated that the chairperson election is an internal MDP election, and once the election is over, everyone will be together to win the 2028 presidential election for the party. However, opposing Mahfooz's perspective, Nasheed immediately stated that the MDP chairperson election is a "Maldives election." Nasheed was presumably trying to make the point that it is a "national election."
When Mahfooz asked exactly how far away those who lose the MDP chairperson election should stay, Nasheed stated that an election is won through the hard work of many people. Nasheed added that pushing aside the people who worked after winning an election is not fair.
"If Mahfooz does not join this side either, it would be best to stay behind," Nasheed said during the WhatsApp group argument.
Following Nasheed's response, Mahfooz began speaking with great dissatisfaction. In response to Nasheed, Mahfooz requested him not to intimidate people. Mahfooz also stated that there will be people who wish to work alongside whoever wins the chairperson election.
"President, when contesting for party positions, you will get those who support you and those who do not. You have contested for a position that requires leading everyone. What I am saying is that the mindset of 'if I get elected, I will teach a lesson to the person who did not support me' is unacceptable," Mahfooz said.
In response, Nasheed stated that everyone can only be led by forming a queue.
In the competitive MDP chairperson election, Galolhu South Constituency Member Mickail Ahmed Naseem is contesting in addition to Nasheed. Along with the heated arguments taking place between the two individuals, the internal atmosphere of MDP has now become tense.
