Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member and social media activist Shamoon Jaleel (Lucas) has been released from custody after having been apprehended during the protests in Male' calling for the release of journalists from custody.

Jaleel was apprehended during the MDP protest that was held on the night of 13th May.

Even though 10 people were apprehended that night, three people have seen an extension to their remand by the court, with the rest having been released.

Jaleel was imprisoned for 10 days in holding, with him having been released today after the expiration of his remand period.

The protest was headed by former President Mohamed Nasheed and MDP's Parliamentary Group members, with assemblies occurring in various parts of Male'. They also had confrontations with the police from time to time.

Subsequently, three former presidents, namely Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih signed an agreement to work for the defense of press freedom and freedom of speech, with efforts surrounding the agreement having begun.
