Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP (Baarah) Ibrahim Shujau has alleged that former President Mohamed Nasheed attempted to secure a spot on this administration's cabinet. Shujau went on to attribute Nasheed's dissatisfaction with the current administration to his disappointment over failing to land such a role. 

Speaking at a rally held at the PNC hub last night, Shujau further alleged that Nasheed had sent proxies to work with then-Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in their efforts to overthrow former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration. 

He noted that Nasheed had been behind MPs like Mohamed Waheed (Ungoofaaru) criticizing the Solih administration over the marine territory issue. 

"He asked us to include him in our efforts to change the government. We responded that everyone who is willing is welcome to join the efforts," Shujau said. 

"This Nasheed who is wishing well for MDP now, these are the things he said in support of overthrowing the MDP government then," Shujau accused. 

Shujau went on to allege that Nasheed's dissatisfaction with the incumbent administration stems from his failure to secure a spot on the cabinet. He claims that Nasheed had requested a cabinet post, but asserted that such an opportunity could not be given to Nasheed in a PNC administration. 

"That is where the problems arose. That is the point at which he had to leave for South Africa. Hassan Latheef is also a witness to this," Shujau claimed. 

Shujau stated that persons who harbour the ideology of selling off Maldives' assets will never be welcomed to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet. 

Nasheed, meanwhile, has issued an apology to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members over his decision to leave the party in 2023. He further said that he believes he, too, is owed an apology by the party's members. 

Nasheed had left the MDP in 2023 following disputes with Solih. He then went on to form The Democrats. While The Democrats also ran in the presidential election, the party did not endorse MDP candidate Solih even in the second round. 

Once President Muizzu came to office, he held a meeting with senior officials of The Democrats at the President's Office. However, The Democrats, too, were later critical of the current administration. 

Last year, Nasheed, along with several members of The Democrats, have returned to MDP.
