Power outage caused during 50MW plant upgrade

Stelco said power outages in Male' and Hulhumale' occurred after an issue arose during a planned upgrade at the Hulhumale' 50 megawatt plant, causing some generating units to shut down.

Stelco said that teams are restoring the system, with several areas now having power restored. The upgrade itself aimed at strengthening long-term stability, the company said.

Electricity being restored in some areas

Stelco just announced that they are gradually restoring electricity service in some areas of Male' and Hulhumale'.

Power has just gone out across the entirety of Male' and Hulhumale'.

At around 12pm today, Male' and Hulhumale' faced an abrupt power cut. Although STELCO confirmed that the power outage spans across Male' and Hulhumale', they are yet to disclose a reason for the powercut, or an estimate of how long it will take to restore service.

"There is a power outage in Male' and Hulhumale' due to a technical issue. Our teams are working on identifying the issue and restoring service," Stelco stated.

STELCO announced last week that in order to conduct some important work at the new 50 megawatt power house in Hulhumale' Phase 1, the engines there would be shut down this morning.

However, they assured that this work had been completed between 3am and 8am today without interrupting power services anywhere in Hulhumale'.

"The first phase of this upgrading work was completed today. We will notify customers ahead once dates are set for the remaining work under these efforts," Stelco stated this morning.

June 1, 2025, also saw a similar power outage across Male' and Hulhumale'. That time, the blackout lasted over five hours.
