The 22-year-old Maldivian who was arrested on suspicion of selling photos and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children through cryptocurrency has been charged.
A media official from the Prosecutor General's (PG) office stated that Adam Adhlan Latheef, 22, of Moonimaage, Th. Vilufushi, who was arrested in connection to the case, has been charged with two counts, with the charges having been filed on Tuesday.
The charges are as follows:
- Intentionally possessing a card filled with explicit content of children on a computer system or storage device
- The crime of creating a pornographic material
If the charges are proven, the suspect will be charged with a prison sentence exceeding three years.
He was arrested under a court order on the 5th of April in a case being investigated in collaboration with the Police Family and Child Protection department.
The police previously stated that Adhlan was arrested as part of an investigation into information received regarding the buying and selling of child pornography using a Binance exchange wallet address.
Police also noted that the investigation had identified funds being sent from that wallet to Adhlan’s crypto account. They further stated that during the forensic analysis of electronic devices seized from him, a large number of photos and videos containing child pornography were found.
