Former President Mohamed Nasheed stated last night that he will be the one to change and strengthen the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and that MDP will be at the forefront of changing the Maldivian government.
During the campaign rally held at Artificial Beach last night for the position of MDP's Chairperson, Nasheed said that only MDP can bring about change to Maldives.
He went on to say that changing the government is something he is familiar with and that if there were anyone other than him to take on that task with MDP, he would find it easier to live at his residence or at Accra, Ghana.
"But that cannot be done. This work is what needs to be done, even if I have to come here and put in a great amount of effort. I have come here ready to do as such," said Nasheed at the campaign rally.
"The government cannot be changed with me, President Yameen and President Solih sitting behind a desk."
He said the government could only be changed if every member of the MDP stood up, adding that such change could only be achieved through the MDP.
He also said the party understood what the public wanted, and that the MDP’s direction should reflect those expectations.
"I know how to go about doing that. When a washing machine breaks, we do not bring someone who does magic. We bring an electrician. I have to be brought in for the party's needs. There is no point in all of you bringing a magician for this," said Nasheed.
After repeatedly stating that he would remove President Dr Mohamed Muizzu from presidency, Nasheed indirectly criticized former presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Abdulla Yameen.
"Please believe that it cannot be done while sitting behind a desk. It cannot be done if we do not react. It can only be done by reacting," said Nasheed.
As per Nasheed, he was "brought back to Maldives" while he was at Accra in order to change the government.
Nasheed went on to say that he and former Presidents Solih and Yameen have signed an agreement to work together.
The agreement signed during the press conference held by the three former presidents states that the constitutional rights of citizens have been violated under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration. It also alleges that the judiciary has been influenced, and that the powers of Parliament and other state institutions have been undermined.
Additionally, the agreement also reads that freedom of press has been obstructed, journalists put in jail, the public's state of living has deteriorated, the economy has stalled and prices have gone up.
