President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that his administration has completed extensive development projects despite heavy debt repayments and global economic pressures.
Speaking on PSM’s Nation Chat programme last night, President Muizzu said his government had undertaken “very different” work compared with the previous administration during its first two and a half years in office.
“The work we have done in the first two and a half years has been very different. We have done a lot of work,” he said.
President Muizzu said more than 1,100 hectares of land had been reclaimed across 21 islands, including 500 hectares in Rasmale' alone.
He said the government had also carried out major projects in land reclamation, harbour development, and water and sewerage infrastructure.
At the same time, the president acknowledged that the previous administration had faced the Covid-19 pandemic during its first half-term, which he said should also be taken into account when comparing records.
President Muizzu added that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East had contributed to delays in some government projects.
“That is the reason for the delay,” he said, adding that he hoped positive results would become visible “within the remaining days of this year”.
The president said housing remained one of his administration’s top priorities since taking office, although debt repayments continued to pose challenges. He also said the government was committed to completing projects initiated under former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
“Completing some of the work begun during Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government is also a pledge,” President Muizzu said.
Referring to housing developments, the president said land plots allocated in Hulhumale', Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru Falhu would be handed over. He added that reclamation work in Hulhumale' Phase 3 had now been completed and that registries and land allocations had already begun.
The president also said the administration was launching new development projects alongside ongoing ones.
