The Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises have stated that the decision has been made to reduce the salary of city Presidents of Women's Development Committees (WDC) to MVR 20,000.
The ministry told Mihaaru News that the salary of WDC Presidents of cities will be MVR 20,000, with the increment of WDC Presidents of islands to be MVR 15,000.
These are the initial salary amounts the Local Government Authority (LGA) issued to the National Pay Commission (NPC).
This is the third time the salary framework of both city and island Presidents of the WDC have been reviewed in two days. The Finance Ministry stated today that these are the "final" changes.
The drastic increments to WDC Presidents of cities and islands drew criticism towards the government, with public opinion on the matter circulating on social media.
The government initially decided to raise the salary of WDC Presidents of cities to MVR 41,500, followed by a decision to lower it to MVR 33,000.
Changes after review of the salary
- WDC Presidents of cities to receive a base salary and living allowance totaling MVR 20,000 per month
- WDC Vice Presidents of cities to receive a base salary and living allowance totaling MVR 7,000 per month
- WDC committee members of cities to receive a base salary and living allowance totaling MVR 6,000 per month
- WDC Presidents of islands to receive a base salary and living allowance totaling MVR 15,000 per month
- WDC Vice Presidents of islands to receive a base salary and living allowance totaling MVR 6,000 per month
- WDC committee members of islands to receive a base salary and living allowance totaling MVR 5,000 per month
Vice Presidents and committee members will receive their total salary in accordance with how many meetings they attend as well. Excluding the base salary, they will receive MVR 500 per meeting they attend as a seating allowance but only limited to a maximum of MVR 2,000 per month.
