The name board of the Salman Mosque, the largest mosque in Maldives, has been installed today; four years after the mosque was officially opened.
The Islamic Ministry announced the installation on social media, noting that the plaque has now been placed at the mosque built in Male' with funding from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
The mosque, which has been open to the public for several years, had faced repeated public criticism over the absence of a name board.
The newly installed inscription is written in Arabic and reads: “Jamiu Hadimul Haramain Sharafaini, Al Malik Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Suud.”
The area where the board has now been placed had previously been covered since the mosque’s opening. The covering was removed last year, leaving the space empty until the recent installation.
Construction of the mosque began in 2017 during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen and cost approximately USD 24 million (MVR 370 million). Although the building was completed within two years, its opening and full use were delayed due to various issues.
The mosque was eventually opened on 1 April 2022, before all works were fully completed, a delay that drew public criticism during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
