The police stated tonight that they are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident in which MNDF officer Staff Sergeant First Class Mohamed Mahudhy passed away while engaged in the efforts to search for the Italian tourists who went missing in an underwater cave in V. Atoll. 

The four Italian tourists and the Italian diving instructor from the safari they were traveling on went missing last Thursday while visiting a cave located at a depth of 60 meters near Alimatha.

The military diver Mahdhee, who was involved in the efforts to recover them from that location, passed away last Saturday while receiving treatment at ADK Hospital for decompression sickness (deco).

Police stated tonight that they have begun looking into the circumstances that led to Mahudhy's death. However, the police have not yet provided any further details regarding the matter.

Although the operation was suspended following Mahudhy's death, a team including three experienced divers from Finland arrived in the Maldives and commenced a recovery mission last Monday with the assistance of the MNDF and the police.

During their first three-hour dive, they successfully located the bodies inside the cave. The bodies of two of them were recovered yesterday. Today, the bodies of the remaining two were recovered.

The Maldivian government has stated that they are now working in coordination with the Italian government to repatriate their bodies. Out of the five divers, the body of Murial Odenino, who was found dead on the very first day, has now been sent back to her country.
