A committee meeting has been scheduled for today to decide the time allocated for debate and response on the motion to remove Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim from the Deputy Speaker post. 

The General Purpose Committee has scheduled a meeting to discuss the motion for 4pm today. In the meeting, MPs will decide on the number of MPs who will be given the chance to speak in the debate on the motion, the time allocated for them, and the number and duration of times Nazim will be allowed to respond. 

The Parliamentary Group of ruling People's National Congress (PNC) decided on Nazim's removal and gathered 73 signatures from party MPs for the subsequent motion. 

The no-confidence motion against Nazim alleges he abused his position for undue gain, created discord, showed bias - including bias towards a specific political ideology when conducting parliamentary work, and encouraging actions that undermined parliamentary decorum while avoiding responsibility.

The motion goes on to state that as Nazim has displayed clear bias in his parliamentary duties, he has been negligent towards protecting the rights and privileges of MPs. His actions have also proven to be an obstruction for MPs in fulfilling their legal duties, the motion reads. 

As per the parliament regulations, a speaker can be removed through a motion submitted with the signatures of at least one-fourth of total number of MPs, which comes to a minimum of 24 MPs. 

In the case of a Deputy Speaker, the regulations state that they can be removed through a majority vote from MPs in attendance. 

While the current parliament has 93 MPs, 76 of them are from ruling PNC.
