Central Henveiru constituency Council Member Meekail Mohamed Riyaz has been elected as the Deputy Mayor of Male' City in the Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) internal primary.

Meekail was elected after running against four candidates in MDP's internal primary, with MDP having a majority in the Male' City Council.

Along with Meekail, candidates include West Maafannu constituency Councilor Mohamed Rilwan Ali, Central Maafannu constituency Councilor Aishath Hana and North Hulhumale' constituency Fathimath Zahiyya (Zaya).

MDP issued three whiplines in electing Meekail as the Deputy Mayor. Meekail secured the position with no additional votes in the subsequent and first official meeting of the City Council's new term after his name was the only one that was submitted.

If only one council member runs for the position of Deputy Mayor for the council, they will be elected without any voting process.

1. Zaya - Five votes

2. Rilwan - Two votes

3. Meekail - Seven votes

4. Hana - Two votes

Along with the Mayor of the Male' City Council, there are a total of 18 councilors.

The councilors that were elected in the 4th April Local Council Elections took their oath of office today. Women's Development Committee members also signed declarations.

According to statistics from the Local Government Authority (LGA), 372 councilors had taken their oaths by 12:00pm this afternoon, along with 304 councilors having not been sworn in.

The LGA stated that 676 councilors are set to take their oaths today, with 662 Women's Development Committee members set to sign declarations.

681 council members and 681 members for the Women's Development Committee were elected, totaling 1,362 members across both elections.

However, the oath-taking ceremony for some of the councilors have not moved forward due to issues in the voting process.
