A Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) diver has passed away while taking part in a search and rescue operation for missing Italian divers in Vaavu Atoll.
Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhy was taken to ADK Hospital in critical condition after surfacing during the operation but later passed away while receiving treatment.
The incident occurred near V. Alimathaa, where five people; four Italian tourists and the safari’s diving instructor went missing while diving on Thursday afternoon.
One diver’s body was recovered after sunset on Thursday, while the remaining four are still unaccounted for.
Authorities said the recovered body was found inside a cave at a depth of around 60 metres (197 feet). Officials believe the other missing divers may also be inside the same cave, which is estimated to extend roughly 200 feet.
The maximum legal diving depth in the Maldives is 30 metres, and authorities have launched an investigation into why the group descended beyond the permitted limit.
The Ministry of Tourism said maintaining safety in the tourism sector is the responsibility of all operators and urged full compliance with regulations, adding that necessary action will be taken to strengthen safety standards.
