The police stated tonight that they will not allow protests to be held outside designated areas in a manner that infringes upon the rights of the general public, as per the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act.

Amidst intensifying protests in Malé since last night following the imprisonment of two "Adhadhu" journalists for contempt of court, the police issued a press release stating they would provide protection to assemblies conducted in accordance with the law and would not discriminate in the provision of rights.

The police noted they have been receiving complaints that protests are infringing on the rights of others, compromising public safety, disrupting the transport system, and causing harm to pedestrians and businesses. Therefore, the statement appealed to protesters to exercise their constitutional rights in a way that does not infringe upon the rights of others.

Referencing the law, the police highlighted that specific locations have been designated in Malé where protests can be held without seeking prior written permission.

"...We inform that no opportunity will be given for assemblies held outside the designated areas in a manner that infringes upon the rights of the general public." the police said.

They further stated that illegal assemblies would be dispersed and that all necessary measures would be taken to protect public interest, including taking legal action against those who organize such events.

While the police issued this statement, protests are continuing in Malé tonight as well. Following the arrest of 10 people during last night's protest—of whom three remain in custody—additional individuals were also arrested before the start of tonight's demonstration.
