Parliament has passed a bill establishing the procedures for human organ transplantation in the Maldives.

The Human Organ Transplantation Bill, submitted by Feydhoo South MP Ibrahim Didi on behalf of the government last October, was passed with 68 MPs voting in favor.

The bill was reviewed by Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee in consultation with the Ministry of Health and the Fatwa Committee.

It was later amended to adjust provisions related to the Organ Transplant Council and the timeframe for issuing regulations.

The bill permits only live-donor organ transplants and outlines which organs may be donated.

Under the law, donors must be at least 18 years old, mentally sound, and Maldivian nationals. Organ donation must be voluntary.

The bill also prohibits individuals in state custody or those serving prison sentences from donating organs. All donations must be approved by a special council and supported by medical professionals.

The introduction of the law comes as the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital was preparing to launch kidney transplant services, which were delayed due to the absence of enabling legislation.

Meanwhile, Tree Top Hospital has also sought government approval to begin kidney and liver transplant procedures.
