Former President Abdulla Yameen has said he is prepared to work alongside former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in defense of journalists.

Speaking to Mihaaru News, Yameen said the decision was prompted by the prosecution of two journalists and the imprisonment of two others over contempt of court charges.

Yameen’s remarks came after former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail called on the country’s former leaders to unite in response to the situation.

Fayyaz, who has expressed interest in contesting the next Presidential Election, said it was time for Nasheed, Yameen and Solih to “come out together to save the country”.

Following Fayyaz’s comments, Nasheed wrote on X that he would also join protests planned for tonight against the arrests of journalists.

Supporters of the opposition MDP and Yameen’s PNF have been holding nightly demonstrations against the government in recent days.

All three former Presidents have criticized the Criminal Court’s decision to jail two journalists for contempt of court.
