Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has departed for India on her first official overseas visit since taking office, the Foreign Ministry said today.
Her visit comes at the invitation of India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.
The ministry said Iruthisham and Jaishankar are expected to hold talks in New Delhi during the trip, focusing on strengthening the long-standing close relationship between the two countries and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
Iruthisham, formerly the Maldives’ ambassador to the United Kingdom, was appointed foreign minister on 14 April. She is the third person to hold the post in the current administration.
Following her appointment, she met Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives G Balasubramaniam at the Foreign Ministry.
The ministry said she is accompanied on the visit by Additional Secretary Dr Ibrahim Zuhury and Assistant Director Aminath Guraisha.
Her appointment came as part of a wider cabinet reshuffle last month, when several ministers resigned and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu merged and restructured a number of ministries.
The President’s Office said the changes were aimed at aligning government work with “the people’s wishes” and enabling more effective governance.
