Women account for 92 percent of nurses working in the Maldives, according to figures released by the Health Ministry.

Statistics published by the ministry on social media show that 3,907 nurses are currently employed across health facilities nationwide.

Of them, 3,291 work in government hospitals while 616 are employed in private healthcare facilities.

The data shows that 3,593 nurses are women, compared with 314 men, meaning roughly nine in every 10 nurses in the country are female.

More than half of the country’s nurses, 1,989 in total, work in the greater Malé area. Another 1,918 are employed in islands outside the capital.

The figures also indicate a shift in the makeup of the nursing workforce, which had previously been dominated by expatriates.

According to the ministry, there are now 2,503 Maldivian nurses and 1,404 foreign nurses working in the country, with locals accounting for 64 percent of the workforce.
