Civil Court has ordered the reinstatement of Maldives Correctional Service Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Asif, ruling that his dismissal from the post was unlawful.
Asif had been suspended last year over allegations that more than MVR 200,000 had been transferred from the Corrections Prisons Club account to other accounts.
Following his dismissal, Asif filed a civil suit against the state challenging the decision.
During the proceedings, the Civil Court had issued an interim order preventing authorities from appointing another person to the position until the case was resolved.
In a ruling delivered on Sunday, the court found that Asif had been wrongfully removed from office and ordered the state to reinstate him. The court also directed authorities to pay his salary for the period during which he was dismissed.
Asif, who served as President of the Prisons Club, had also faced corruption allegations raised in a petition submitted by staff members to Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer.
Before his dismissal, he had been suspended with pay for eight months pending investigation.
