Elections Commission has fined the People’s National Front (PNF) MVR 100,000, citing repeated violations of the Political Parties Act.

In a letter sent to party leader former President Abdulla Yameen, the commission said the party had repeatedly breached provisions of Section 45 of Act No. 4/2013 and had failed to comply despite earlier warnings.

EC said it had previously advised the party to halt the violations and requested meetings to address the matter, but said these were not followed.

“As a result, your party has been fined MVR 100,000,” the letter stated.

The commission also warned that further violations by the party or its members could lead to legal action.

It said political activity must be conducted within the boundaries of the Political Parties Act, the Peaceful Assembly Act, and other applicable laws in the Maldives.

The fine comes amid ongoing demonstrations linked to the party, including nightly gatherings in Male' featuring loudspeakers and PNF flags near the People’s National Congress (PNC) office and other locations.

Earlier, Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission ordered Channel 13 not to broadcast the party’s protests live.

While the PNF has distanced itself from organising the demonstrations, it has said supporters are responsible for the gatherings.

The party has also been accused of maintaining involvement through its media groups and and equipment used in the demonstrations have been seen brough in and out of PNF office.
