President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said World Thalassemia Day serves as a reminder to place humanity and compassion above everything else.

In a message on social media to mark the day, President Muizzu said the occasion encourages stronger community support and cooperation to build a more inclusive society for patients and their families.

“Every Maldivian suffering from thalassemia is our children. Our family members,” he said, adding that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure access to healthcare, social protection and opportunities for affected families.

The government currently provides a monthly allowance of MVR 2,000 to children and individuals living with thalassemia.

Authorities have also relocated the Thalassemia Centre from its former premises in Male' to Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumale', citing space constraints at the previous facility.

World Thalassemia Day is observed annually on 8 May to raise awareness of the condition and support those affected.

President Muizzu has previously said his administration places special emphasis on improving treatment services and support systems for thalassemia patients and their families.
