President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced last night that a branch of Bank of Maldives (BML) is to be opened in Sri Lanka. 

During the ongoing official visit to the country, President Muizzu met with Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka yesterday. 

Addressing them, he shared that efforts are underway to open a BML branch in Sri Lanka, with the initiative looking promising. He said that discussions during this visit has paved the way to implement the initiative in the near future. 

The President noted that opening a branch of the Maldivian national bank in Sri Lanka would pose significant benefits to citizens of both countries, as well as businesses. 

It would present convenience to Maldivians living in Sri Lanka as well as Sri Lankans living in Maldives, he said. 

While BML has branches in all atolls of Maldives and ATMs in all islands, it has not yet opened a branch outside the country.
