Maldives Police Service have forwarded a sexual assault case to the Prosecutor General’s office, seeking to charge a man with raping a 19 year old woman in capital Male earlier this month.

The 34 year old suspect is accused of raping the victim on the night of January 3. He was arrested on January 6 in his home island of Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaal atoll and his remand has been extended twice.

According to rumours, the man had taken the 19 year old woman to an art studio in Male under the guise of assisting her with an art project. Some media outlets have reported the victim as claiming that the man had offered her money afterwards to keep the assault secret. Reports stated that she had refused the deal and filed the case at the authorities.

However, other reports cite the suspect as saying that the woman had tried to extort money from him and approached him at his home. He had denied all allegations against him and accused the victim of defaming him.
