People’s National Front (PNF) has denied organizing a series of nightly gatherings near the People’s National Congress (PNC) office at Artificial Beach, following a warning from Elections Commission (EC).

In a letter to the EC, the party said it was not conducting any political activities as alleged.

“We do not believe the EC has to grant permission for a political party to hold a demonstration. We do not believe the EC has any mandate over public spaces in Male',” the party said.

EC had earlier warned it could take action against the PNF for allegedly holding repeated demonstrations outside the legal framework.

Responding to media queries, PNF secretary-general Mohamed Maleeh Jamal said the gatherings were not organized by the party.

“The PNF will not interfere with the political activities of its supporters,” he said.

Supporters have been gathering near the PNC office on most nights, except Fridays, with Maleeh also attending some of the events.

Meanwhile, a resolution was submitted to parliament on Monday calling for action against the PNF over alleged repeated violations of the Political Parties Act.
