West Maafannu MP Mohamed Musthafa has today called to dissolve parties which, he said, are staging political activity in violation of the Constitution and laws. 

The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) submitted a resolution to parliament today alleging that some political parties are engaging in activities that violate the constitution and the law, and calling for action to stop them.  

Speaking in the ensuing debate, Musthafa said that political parties are committing several actions recently which are explicitly prohibited in laws. He alleged that parties are creating fear amongst the people and committing actions against Islamic principles, both actions impermissible under the Political Parties Act. 

"If parties are acting outside the law, we must take action against them. If they are violating these laws, then we should obtain a court order and dissolve these parties. We must move immediately, today, to submit this to the Elections Commission and High Court to dissolve parties that break the law," Musthafa asserted. 

The resolution was presented today by Holhudhoo MP AbduSattar Mohamed, who said unlawful political activities were causing public inconvenience and disrupting social order. He called on MPs to consider legal action against parties found to be acting outside the law.

The move comes amid ongoing nightly protests by former president Abdulla Yameen’s People’s National Front (PNF) at the Artificial Beach area. There have also been reports of PNF supporters gathering near a PNC campaign hub in the area, causing disturbances.

Elections Commission (EC) said in a statement that it had received information indicating the PNF had repeatedly held demonstrations outside the legal framework, warning that action would be taken if such activities continued.
