Elections Commission (EC) tonight warned that it will take action against People’s National Front (PNF) if they continue to hold protests and gatherings outside of legal boundaries and act in a manner that obstructs the activities of other political parties.

In a statement released by EC, it noted that holding political gatherings and activities in public areas and streets outside the scope permitted by law is an act that violates the code of conduct for political parties. The statement further emphasized that it is a legal obligation for all political parties to operate within the limits permitted by the Freedom of Assembly Act when conducting political activities and gatherings.

EC also pointed out that actions by members or supporters of one political party to obstruct a meeting being conducted by another party, or attempting to hold a meeting at the same time and place where another party is already conducting one, are acts that contravene the code of conduct specified in the Political Parties Act.

Recently, while a meeting was underway at the PNC hub, PNF protesters gathered nearby, playing music and staging demonstrations.

EC stated it had received reports that PNF had repeatedly engaged in illegal acts during a series of gatherings and activities. It added that the party had been advised against such conduct and formally notified of the commission’s position. The commission also said it had invited PNF representatives for discussions on the matter, but the party declined to attend.

The statement noted that if these actions are repeated, the commission will take the necessary measures under the Political Parties Act.
