A case has been submitted to the Civil Court seeking to void the announcement issued by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) regarding the party's chairperson election. 

The case was filed by lawyer Abdulla Shaairu. 

Former President Mohamed Nasheed and South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem are competitively campaigning for the election, while a third candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed (Waadu), is also running. 

According to the case submitted by lawyer Shaairu, the MDP's announcement was made in a manner that obstructs Nasheed's campaign efforts. The filing contends that the Electoral Committee's decision contravenes party regulations, the Constitution, and accepted international standards of justice, arguing the decision holds no legal standing. 

The case further maintains that a sudden announcement of a deadline in deciding members that are eligible to vote in the election infringes upon the legal rights of party members. 

The case notes that in the Chairperson elections held previously, in 2017 and 2021, it was the President of the Appeals Judicial Council that held the authority to manage the elections. 

Shaairu, who previously served on Nasheed's legal team, has asked the Civil Court to void the MDP's election announcement and to order that election management be placed under the President of the party's Appeals Judicial Council. 

While the matter has been submitted to court, Shaairu has previously sent a letter directly to the MDP as well seeking to void the announcement.
