The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised the public to take precautions as Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms.

NDMA urges the public to take the following measures during thunderstorms to minimize possible damage and to ensure safety:

  • Avoid open spaces and high grounds.
  • Stay indoors.
  • Avoid taking shelter under high objects and trees.
  • Unplug electronics and avoid using them
  • Stay out of flood water, avoid touching wet items and metal objects

The MET Office, meanwhile, has issued a Yellow Alert from 10am to 1pm today for the atolls spanning from Lhaviyani atoll to Vaavu atoll.

In a statement issued yesterday, the MET Office also predicts there will be higher than average rainfall from June to September this year.

Temperatures are also expected to be higher than average during these months.
