President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said responsible journalism is vital for empowering citizens, ensuring access to information and maintaining a transparent, accountable democracy.

In a message marking World Press Freedom Day, President Muizzu extended greetings to media professionals and acknowledged the role of journalists in public service.

He described the media as a fourth estate that connects the branches of government, stressing its importance within the constitutional framework.

President Muizzu also highlighted that while freedom of expression is highly valued, it must be exercised within ethical boundaries. He emphasized the need to uphold moral standards, protect human dignity and safeguard social harmony and national security.

The President said creating a safe and supportive environment for journalists remains a priority for his administration, reaffirming a commitment to press freedoms guaranteed under the constitution.

He pointed to broader global debates around journalism, technology and civil liberties, and said efforts under the Maldives 2.0 initiative would help strengthen the country’s information ecosystem.

President Muizzu also acknowledged structural challenges facing the media sector, including financial sustainability in a small market, and said the government was working to support the development of skilled media professionals.

He added that independent journalism plays a critical role in civic engagement and the protection of factual information, describing it as essential to national development.

President Muizzu concluded by reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to supporting media development, improving access to information and promoting open public discourse, while urging journalists to continue their work with integrity.
