Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) has stated today that it was on a directive from the Prosecutor General's Office that the police launched an investigation into the 'Aisha' documentary produced by media outlet 'Adhadhu'.

At the weekly 'Presser with the Spox' press briefing launched today, Shareef dismissed suggestions that the investigation into Adhadhu was initiated on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's orders, saying the government had not directed such a probe. 

"The investigation that is ongoing now, one, was not ordered by the President, it was not, I am reiterating this for the record. Two, it was not ordered by the government. Two investigations are being carried out relating to Adhadhu," Shareef said. 

Mihaaru News reports that the PG Office instructed the police to open the investigation on April 19.

The summons chits sent to Adhadhu CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and Editor Hassan Mohamed stated that the documentary, which featured anonymous interviews with altered voices, is alleged to contain Qazf against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Qazf is an Islamic legal term referring to the false accusation of adultery or fornication.  

Following these allegations, police entered the Adhadhu offices last Monday night and seized several items, including electronics.

Fiyaz and Hassan were summoned to Police yesterday, and their statements taken. Both opted to exercise their right to remain silent, asserting they would not reveal sources. 

In today's press briefing, Shareef said that freedom of expression and assembly are guaranteed by the Constitution provided it is within Islamic principles. He stated that journalists' actions should also remain within these boundaries. 

"That boundary has been crossed here. That is the investigation that is going on now," he said.
