Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called upon Maldivian journalists to uphold the fundamental standards of journalism and to work with responsibility when disseminating information to the public.

Amid the escalating tension surrounding the documentary titled "Aisha," produced by the news outlet "Adhadhu", which levels serious allegations against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Vice President stated in a social media post that responsible journalism requires respecting democratic principles and verifying the accuracy of information before reporting.

The Vice President noted that when working outside the fundamental standards of journalism, there is a high risk of spreading inaccurate information among the general public who rely on news, which could lead to a loss of societal harmony.

In connection with this documentary, Police entered the office of Adhadhu last night, searched the premises, and seized a large number of items. Additionally, the passports of Adhadhu’s Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and Editor Hassan Mohamed have been withheld. The passports were seized on the grounds that they might leave the country while the investigation into the allegations made against the President in the documentary is ongoing.

During a press conference held yesterday, when asked about the documentary, President Muizzu denied all accusations made in it. He further stated that he would request relevant authorities to take legal action against all parties involved in its production.

Home Minister Ali Ihusaan stated today that searching a media office in cases where there are allegations of slandering the President is a power granted to the Police and a responsibility they must fulfill.

In a post on X written in English, Ihusaan stated that while press freedom is ensured, it is not a freedom to assassinate the character of individuals. The Minister also included references to articles in the Constitution regarding fundamental rights.

"Fabricating and spreading serious allegations is not journalism. The Police are upholding the rule of law and the rights granted to the President by the Constitution," Minister Ihusaan said.

Regarding the police action against Adhadhu, international journalists' associations and several foreign countries have expressed concern, calling on the government to protect press freedom.
