A forecast from the Maldives Meteorological (MET) Office states that there will be rainfall in islands in the South and Central Maldives for the next five days. However, they said that islands in North Maldives will have generally good weather.
The MET office also stated that even though some areas will experience rainfall, they predict that wind speeds will not pick up and the seas will not be rough.
With the Hulhangu Monsoon (Southwest Monsoon) fast approaching, Maldives usually experiences rainfall in early May.
Generally, the effects of the Hulhangu Monsoon are felt by southern atolls in the first or second week of May. After that, it reaches atolls in Central Maldives, with the monsoon starting for all of Maldives.
As per the MET office's criteria, the Hulhangu Monsoon started on 7th May in 2025. In the atolls located in Central Maldives, the monsoon started on 12th May in 2025 and for 26th May in 2025 for all of Maldives.
Criteria to see whether the Hulhangu Monsoon has started
There are two ways the MET office can use to see whether the Hulhangu Monsoon has started. These are the amount of rainfall and wind direction.
- Southern atolls are to experience 2.5 millimeters of rainfall or more after 1st May, with it to continue for two consecutive days.
- Wind direction is to be between southwest and west exceeding 10 nautical miles per hour, with it to continue for two consecutive days.
