President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated today that of the money that is owed to private companies from the government, MVR 3.3 billion has been paid from November until now.

During the President's Weekly Press Briefing, statistics from the Ministry of Finance have shown that the government has been releasing funds to an average of around 700 vendors weekly over the last six months. According to the President, along with handing over MVR 3.5 billion from November until now, the government is preparing to pay around MVR 260 million worth of bills over the course of the rest of the month.

Many companies have previously expressed concern regarding the lack of a considerable amount of pay to the companies that worked on government projects. The President previously had announced various dates as to when those companies would be paid for their services.

"From 1st November 2025 until 26th April 2026, we have paid various Maldivian companies and local vendors MVR 3.3 billion and 3,300 bills worth MVR 1 million over the last six months," said the President.

According to President Muizzu, the government released said funds while they were paying off foreign debt, of which the amount of debt that was paid off over approximately the last three weeks was also shared today.

Over the last 21 days, around USD 1 billion had been paid towards foreign debt, as was said by the President.

"We paid the sukuk on 2nd April, which was USD 524 million. On 23rd April, we paid India's swap, which was USD 400 million. And so, over the course of around 21 days, we have paid off around USD 1 billion in debt," said the President.

President Muizzu also stated that the government paid off those debts without selling off any assets and without setting up any mortgages.
