Japan has donated Maldives disaster management equipment worth USD 4.3 million (MVR 66 million).
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that as part of the first stage of the agreement that was signed on 24th March 2026 in regards to societal and business growth, Japan has donated Maldives 40 fire pumps, 40 water pumps for drainage and relevant equipment totaling USD 4.3 million.
The equipment was handed over by the Ambassador of Japan to Maldives Ishigami Rumiko and was received by the CEO of NDMA Hisan Hassan at a ceremony that was held today.
During the ceremony, Hisan said that the equipment that has been donated will be a great aid in Maldives' efforts to overcome disasters.
Along with that, Hisan said that the project will bring progress towards NDMA's efforts in empowering society when it comes to strengthening matters of disasters moving forward within a decentralized system.
Ambassador Ishigami said that the donation will ensure the islands and communities receive the important resources that are needed to protect themselves from disasters. She also said that it is an important step to ensure islands are prepared against disasters and that their ability to overcome disasters increases.
The NDMA stated that Japan maintains a close relationship with Maldives and aims to assist to reduce the damage that can be done because of disasters. This includes the development of NDMA and Japan making significant donations in 2015 and 2017. Japan has recently given USD 89,900 (MVR 1.3 million) in aid to Maldives in order to provide two emergency support vehicles.
Due to that aid, the NDMA said that their efforts in protection against damage from climate change, natural disasters and fires will become more well-rounded.
