South Galolhu constituency MP and running candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson post Meekail Ahmed Naseem has stated that if a candidate who announces they endorse a certain candidate for MDP's presidential ticket and then gets elected as the Chairperson of a party, there will always be an opportunity for differences of opinion to arise.

Meekail made this statement in his MDP Chairperson election campaign video, aiming it at former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is one of the individuals who have announced they will be running for the post of MDP's Chairperson. The election will be held on 12th June 2026.

Nasheed has announced his support for former Economic Minister Fayyaz as MDP's presidential candidate. Fayyaz is currently taking the initiative and has begun the practical efforts regarding Nasheed's chairperson election campaign.

Meekail went on to say that if someone who announced that they endorse a certain candidate takes the initiative to plan out the party's primary, the views of members will shift.

"So it is important there is someone who does not take any sides or stands with a certain person," said Meekail.

Meekail has denied rumors that he is running for the position of MDP's chairperson as one of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's "people".

Meekail said that he is not working to bring any specific individual to MDP's leadership or into the presidential office. He said that he is instead working to make MDP the ruling party and to put the party in a good position.

"MDP has 50,000 members. That is not just one person, not just one individual. Neither is MDP full of candidates interested in the Presidential Election. MDP is MDP's public members." said Meekail.

According to Meekail, supporters of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former President Mohamed Nasheed, MDP's President Abdulla Shahid and former Vice President Faisal Naseem see Meekail as a viable candidate for the Chairperson post.

Reason being, as per Meekail, he is someone who is not "committed" to a certain person during the chairperson election.

"For example, I say that I want President Solih to be elected as the President, and if I say I stand with President Solih, then would not the rest refuse to offer their support to me? If I support them then the others would not support me," said Meekail.

How Meekail sees it is if the 2028 Presidential Election is to be won by MDP, those who stand at the top of the party need to show that they are friendly with one another.

"Our party needs to stand together as one."
