Maldives Immigration has announced that they have introduced a more simplified process for Tourist Visa extensions from April 23 onwards.

The changes are part of the Maldives 2.0 initiative which aims to enhance digital services across the country and improve overall visitor experience, Immigration said.

The updated system removes the need for applicants to re-enter information already stored in the Immigration database. Passport details, accommodation records and other key data are now automatically filled in, streamlining the process and reducing application time.

Tourists can submit visa extensions requests through the IMUGA portal, Immigration explained. By entering a passport number or uploading an image of the passport's biodata page, the system will retrieve and fill in the required personal information. Along with this, applicants are also required to upload a passport-sized photo taken within the past 12 months.

According to Immigration, the biodata page is only required in specific circumstances, such as when a passport has been renewed or when the information provided does not match existing records.

Travelers who have changed accommodation during their stay can update their hotel details directly within the application, they said.

With these newly implemented changes, Immigration expects visa extension applications to be now processed within just 48 hours.

Immigration also reminded visa holders to adhere to the terms of their permit and remain within the scope of the visa issued.

The upgrade demonstrates the government's commitment to enhancing public services through digital innovation and strengthening support for the tourism industry, Immigration stated.
