Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusan stated today that the rumors surrounding the start of a criminal investigation into Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim are false.
In response to a journalist's question during the press briefing held at the President's Office, the Homeland Minister said that if a source has provided any information stating that there is an ongoing investigation into Nazim, the "source needs to be changed" and that the source is providing false information.
"You are to source proper information. It is completely false that there is an investigation going on against Nazim. There is no such investigation," said Ihusan.
Rumors about Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Dhiggaru MP Nazim were picked up by the media on the day he was suddenly dismissed from two major Parliament committees.
He was dismissed from the committees on Tuesday, 14th April 2026.
One of the rumors that spread was that an effort to relieve Nazim of his position as the Deputy Speaker had begun. Rumors that an investigation had begun due to accusations that Nazim had worked against the government also spread afterward.
However, supermajority of the Parliament People's National Congress's (PNC) Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah has denied the accusations.
When Falah was previously asked by Mihaaru News regarding rumors that had spread stating PNC's Parliamentary Group were internally working towards dismissing Nazim from his position, he said that there are no such acts and that there is no reason to do as such.
"The rumors that are being spread are absolute lies. They are far from the truth," said Falah.
Despite Falah’s remarks, another member said they believe the Deputy Speaker “stepping away” from the role could materialize.
"However, the accumulation of signatures in relieving Nazim from his post has not started yet. It is being indirectly steered that way," as was told by the MP to Mihaaru News who wished to remain anonymous.
MP Nazim was a part of two of the strongest committees in the Parliament in his capacity as one of the most influential members in the ruling party and supermajority holder of Parliament, PNC. Nevertheless, he has been dismissed from both the committees, and is now serving on the Committee on Environment and Climate Change.
Nazim was removed from two of the strongest parliament committees: the National Security Services Committee (241 Committee) and the Public Accounts Committee.
The National Security Services Committee is often called the 241 Committee in reference to Article 241 of the Maldives Constitution. This is the only parliament committee that is specifically mentioned in the Constitution. It bears responsibility of oversight of security services, and advises the parliament and the government on related affairs.
The Public Accounts Committee, meanwhile, has always been the most highly regarded committee within the parliament. It is responsible for examining State and government expenditure and debt, among other related affairs.
When Mihaaru News asked Nazim about his removal from two of the strongest committees in Parliament, he said that PNC's parliamentary group has decided to replace him on both committees because, owing to his current work obligations, he is unable to commit sufficient time for the committees.
"Maldives is hosting a meeting of the Commonwealth Parliament Group next week. I have to take the lead in that as well. And then early next month, I have to leave on a personal trip," Nazim explained.
As per Nazim, he was removed from both of the committees because of these reasons.
With his removal from the two key committees, Nazim now serves only on the State Owned Enterprises Committee and the Committee on Environment and Climate Change.
