The Head of Maldives National University (MNU) dormitory Dhanaal, Ahmed Shafeeq (Sappe'), has been suspended last night for failure to report the case of the 18-year-old who died to the management despite previous mental health complications which had led to hospitalization. 

The 18-year-old girl took her own life at Dhanaal in the early hours of Tuesday. 

At a press briefing held at the President's Office this morning, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusan shared a timeline of the girl's conversation with the Police's Victim Support Unit on the night of her death. 

According to Ihusan, the girl had been diagnosed and had been under treatment for mental health issues. 

He further said that the girl had sought Police assistance in a previous instance last month, where officers had responded and facilitated psychological treatment for her in hospital. 

Shafeeq was suspended for failure to report the case to MNU management despite being aware that she had been taken to hospital last month for related issues. 

"When she was taken to hospital and treated for a sensitive issue last month, the Dhanaal Head was informed. But, despite knowing all this, he had not reported to this to any member of MNU's management. Nor had he requested for MNU Student Support," a senior official in the education sector told Mihaaru News. 

They said that the girl had been taken to hospital last month because she had been at risk of self harm, stressing that had this been reported to the MNU management at the time, more appropriate measures could have been set in place. 

"No one has at any time reported to MNU any instances of the girl being bullied by other students. There is no record of that," they said. 

The timeline released today by Minister Ihusan also indicates that it took Police nearly 25 minutes working with administrative staff at Dhanaal to identify which room the girl resided in. 

There has been widespread speculation in the public space regarding the death of the 18 year old, who had been residing at Dhanaal while studying at MNU. 

Ihusan stated today that the girl had reached out to the Victim Support Unit on the night of her death. He said that she had messaged Victim Support via Viber seven times, with Police having responded twice. 

Six hours passed between her having sent the first message to Victim Support and officers reaching Dhanaal to check on her. Police initially responded via text, but dispatched officers to Dhanaal after she failed to respond and her Viber number went offline.
