The High Court has decided not to accept cases filed requesting a recount of votes in two constituencies from the Local Council Elections.
Election complaints were submitted to the High Court by MDP and a candidate who contested for a seat on the Th. Thimarafushi Council following the Council and Women's Development Committee elections held on the 4th of this month.
MDP’s case requested a recount of a ballot box in the Velidhoo constituency, alleging that votes for two MDP candidates were invalidated after a previous recount of that box. Meanwhile, the candidate from Thimarafushi submitted a complaint claiming that after the provisional results of a ballot box placed in Malé were announced, the Commission altered the result sheet, including invalid votes, and declared a different candidate as the winner.
Regarding both matters, the High Court Registrar decided not to accept the cases on the grounds that they failed to specify how the Elections Commission’s decisions violated the law.
Under the General Elections Act, if there is dissatisfaction with a decision made by the Elections Commission, the High Court serves as the court of first instance to hear election-related complaints.
