As a step in bringing about changes to the judiciary, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the government has the intention to bring an end to the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) being under the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), and to reform the Judicial Council.

During the press conference held at the President's Office, the President alleged that during the most recent MDP government, the government made many attempts to exert their influence onto the judiciary. 

As per President Muizzu, one of the negative things the MDP government did was bringing the judiciary's administrative powers under the JSC and that it has opened up the opportunity for the government to exert their influence onto the judiciary, even indirectly, because of the change.

"As part of our efforts in reforming the judiciary, we want to amend the DJA's position being under the control of the JSC, and so our intent is to amend the Judicature Act as to how it initially was," said President Muizzu.

The President stated that a council under the name of the Judicial Council existed in the past, with the council being abolished during MDP's initial election to office in 2011.

"The Judicial Council consists of the Chief Justice, all of the Supreme Court judges and the key judges from the High Court. The council was meant to hold technical discussions in the professional sector. That council was abolished," said President Muizzu.

The President went on to say that there are Acts that need to be amended in order to reform the Judicial Council. He also said that he wishes to change DJA into a place where the Chief Justice and the Judicial Council can hold people accountable. 

President Muizzu stated that he sees the change where the Chief Judicial Administrator would need to be held accountable by the Judicial Council and the Chief Justice as being a good change to the court's system.
