President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated today that while taking the recent results from the referendum vote into account, the government has no intention of bringing about any further amendments to the Constitution.

During a press conference that was held at the President's Office, the President said that amending the Constitution is not something the public really wants, as was made clear by the results of the referendum vote that was held on 4th April.

"I feel that the public has given us an important message from the referendum vote. Amending the Constitution is not something the public really believes in and is not something the public favors," said President Muizzu.

"And so, we have no intention of bringing about any sort of amendment to the Constitution."

However, the President said that they will continue to move forward with the previous announcements regarding amendments to the Constitution.

These include reforming the JSC, determining the count of Parliament members, and the amendments regarding the allocation of a certain percent of the Parliament to women and the youth.

69 percent of the vote went against the referendum vote where the amendment to the Constitution would be to hold the Presidential Election and the Parliamentary Election on the same day. This amounts to 148,859 votes against, with 67,680 people voting in favor of it.

While speaking at AA. Rasdhoo during a ceremony to celebrate PNC's victory on the island in the Local Council Election, President Muizzu said the reason the government experienced defeat regarding the referendum vote was because of shortcomings from PNC's campaign team.
