Man gets 16-year prison sentence for child sexual abuse

Mohamed Anil, of M. Muniyaage, has been convicted in a case where he was charged with sexually abusing an 11 year old girl. The Criminal Court handed him a 16-year prison sentence last Thursday.

Mohamed Anil, of M. Muniyaage, has been convicted in a case where he was charged with sexually abusing an 11 year old girl. The Criminal Court handed him a 16-year prison sentence last Thursday.

Police said today that 47 year old Anil was charged under the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Abuse Offenders. 

Although he was sentenced to 16 years, the 4 months and 19 days he spent in remand is considered as time served under Article 186 of the Criminal Procedure Act. With this, Anil now has to serve a sentence of 15 years, 7 months and 11 days. 

Police said that the conviction is a success in their efforts to stop child sexual abuse, investigate such cases, and bring perpetrators to justice. 

Police assured that they remain committed to do all necessary to protect children from abuse, and investigate cases of negligence and abuse of children.
