The Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has instructed Police to expand and expedite the investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Mohamed Nasheed. 

At around 8:27pm on May 6, 2021, Nasheed had come out of his family residence G. Kenereege with his bodyguards and was making his way to his car when a home-built bomb was detonated, seriously injuring him. This year marks five years since the incident, with the investigation still remaining open. 

Nasheed, and his supporters, have been raising concerns about the delays in the investigation and the failure to serve justice. 

On April 8, the Prosecutor General directed Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed to expand and expedite the investigation into this case, Mihaaru News reports. 

As it is believed that there were others involved in funding and planning the assassination attempt, the PG instructed Police to expand the investigation and notify the PG Office if any such issues are identified through the investigation. 

In relation to the bomb detonation, the State charged eight individuals. These include:

Adhuham pled guilty in 2021 to active participation in the detonation of the bomb and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. The trials of the other seven accused remains stalled. 

Parliament also conducted an inquiry into the terror attack, which noted that there was intelligence issues involved. 

Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim said in National Security Services Committee (241 committee) meeting that the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC) has told the committee that issues regarding intelligence sharing between uniformed bodies remain unresolved. 

Nazim said that issues in intelligence coordination is the most major issue highlighted in the confidential report on the attack prepared by the committee. 

Nasheed was attacked through a bomb, fixed to a motorcycle parked in the vicinity, being detonated as he came out of his residence. Nasheed had been serving as Speaker of Parliament at the time. The attack left him with serious injuries, for which he underwent major surgeries, both in Maldives and abroad. 

Unconfirmed reports at the time said that an MP had notified then Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi that such an attack was being planned, but the government had failed to take action. However, the government at the time rejected these claims. 

The Democrats, a breakaway party formed by Nasheed after his prior exit from MDP, also raised concerns that the case has not proceeded besides sentencing one individual who had confessed. They stated that the investigation had failed to identify others involved or those behind planning the attack.
